From Wavecell to 8x8 Asia – Our Story

Ten years ago, Wavecell’s CEO and co-founder, Olivier Gerhardt, recognized that telecom operators and enterprises needed someone to bridge their communication gap. What began as a self-funded venture to do just that has become a multicultural team of 80 people working in 5 countries across Southeast Asia to simplify real-time cloud communications.

Just last year, we were recognised for the difference we’ve made in cloud communications in Asia, and joined the 8x8 family to provide a holistic cloud platform globally – with chat, video conferencing, contact center and APIs.

In a world where “customer-centric” has become a trendy buzzword, we’re proof that talking to your customers—as simply and clearly as possible—is no trend. It’s the key to growth.

  • Olivier Gerhardt

    Managing Director & GM
    Olivier Gerhardt

    Olivier Gerhardt, Wavecell’s founding CEO, joins 8x8 as Managing Director & GM. Prior to co-founding Wavecell, Olivier spent ten years at Sybase 365, the world’s largest mobile messaging and payments provider, where he was initially an International Business Development Manager and later from 2005 onward, the Sales Director, France. Olivier joined Nortel Networks in 1998 as an International Presales Manager.

    Olivier actively participates in the technology industry, helping fund and advise several companies in the Telecom, Internet and Financial services industries. He holds a Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Telecom Lille in France and completed an International Marketing Programme at INSEAD.

  • Christophe Riccardi

    VP Global Sales & Operations
    Christophe Riccardi

    Christophe Riccardi serves as the VP, Global CPaaS, where he is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and general management of 8x8 Asia. He also focuses on driving innovation in the multi-channel communications space in the region.

    Previously, Christophe assumed the role of Vice President Head of Sales for international sales organisation, SAP, within its Mobile Service Business Unit. During his stint at SAP, he was greatly involved in spearheading business strategies and sales efforts in Europe, North America and Asia.

    With more than 20 years in the Telecommunication and Mobile industry, Christophe brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge to expand the company.

    Christophe holds a Masters Degree in Master of Science in Networks and Telecommunications from University College of London and an Engineering Degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Telecommunications de Bretagne.

  • Deepraj Sawhney

    VP Finance, Asia
    Deepraj Sawhney

    Deepraj has over 8 years of experience in international management, operations and finance spanning four continents. He was previously with Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield services company and worked with a private equity firm looking for potential investments in various industries within India.

    Deepraj graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a Bachelors of Technology in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering and has an MBA (Dean’s List) from INSEAD Business School with a focus on finance and entrepreneurship. He is passionate about developing a strategic vision for innovation startups and how it relates to the bigger picture of investment management and venture capital.

  • Anton Shchekalov

    VP Engineering
    Anton Shchekalov

    Anton Shchekalov brings over 12 years of technical experience in the mobile payments and messaging industry. Prior to joining the team, Anton was holding the CTO position at i-Free Group, major mobile payments and messaging provider in Russia and CIS region. He was one of the active contributors to the appearance of Premium SMS payments market in Russia since 2005. He has a strong background in server side technologies, databases, agile methodologies, project and product management.

    Anton holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Saint-Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Russia where he graduated with distinction.

  • Matthieu Fournier

    VP Global Accounts
    Matthieu Fournier

    Matthieu has, over the years, acquired valuable experiences in setting up new businesses (commercial and operation aspects). He has worked in both France and Singapore to manage and coach the sales team within these industries: Broadcast, Digital Media and Telecom.

    Matthieu holds a diploma in Broadcast business from a Broadcasting school. He is passionate about Asia’s dynamic and strategic market as well as to develop high-performing teams to make an impact while having fun.

  • Tan Lee Peng

    VP Regional Sales
    Tan Lee Peng

    Lee Peng has over 20 years of sales experience in tackling the APAC market, having held several senior roles previously with Siemens, JDSU and Flash Networks. During his past tenure in Siemens, Lee Peng also managed regional teams, dealing with both direct and channel sales across several verticals.

    Lee Peng brings with him a wealth of experience in multiple sectors – telecommunication, banking, oil & gas, gaming and more.

  • Oscar Lee

    VP Carrier Relations
    Oscar Lee

    Oscar brings more than 20 years of carrier experience in wholesale voice, mobile data and messaging with Asia Pacific Telcos, Mobile Operators and aggregators. His previous companies include Singapore Telecom, Telecom Italia Sparkle, TNZI, BICS and Syniverse. He has built many strong carrier relationships by bringing trust and value to achieve mutual benefit and success.

    Oscar holds a BSocSci(Hons) in Sociology from the National University of Singapore.

  • Marc Magnin

    Head of Product
    Marc Magnin

    Prior to joining the team, Marc was working in France for PayPal and Rakuten, where he managed key accounts and served them as a consultant to tailor their WebMarketing strategies. Marc is passionate about innovation, Web marketing and all the mediums to connect people and products through technology.

    Marc holds a master degree in management from SKEMA business school and fell in love with Asia after spending 1 year in Suzhou (China) for a master specialization year focused on Asian Business Environment and specificities.

  • Lee Vidor

    Head of Innovation & CSO
    Lee Vidor

    Lee has over 9 years experience in Technical Customer Support covering a range of architectural environments; physical, virtual and cloud. He has a solid background in Computer Science including experience in IT Systems administration and Web/Mobile application development.

    Lee has gained commercial experience in Windows, Unix/Linux, OSX and Android SDK. He holds various customer support accreditations gained through advanced courses in IT Services and Development.

    Lee also possesses certifications from both Microsoft and Cisco training programs.

  • Eliza Koo

    Head of Marketing & Communications
    Eliza Koo

    Eliza has 7 years of marketing and communication experiences within the technology sector ranging from start-ups, medium to big companies. She led campaigns and initiatives that successfully increased revenue, brand awareness and industry engagements.

    Eliza holds a Diploma in Digital Media from Singapore Polytechnic, as well as a Bachelor Degree of Arts in Communication Studies from University of Western Australia.

  • Joyce Ng

    Head of People
    Joyce Ng

    Joyce carries with her around 7 years of Human Resource (HR) Business Partnering experience; mainly as a generalist covering the full spectrum of HR functions across the Asia-Pacific region such as; Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar,  Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Greater China, Japan, Korea and Australia.

    She also has experience working in Finance and Change Management roles. While managing and travelling to the offices in her region of care, she has also picked up Basic conversational Korean, Thai and Bahasa Indonesia

    She graduated with a Bachelor in Business from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and also recently attained a Post-Graduate Diploma in HR and Talent Management from Singapore Human Resource Institute (SHRI).
